This book, written in 1957, gives probably the best overview and explanation of the legendary "Mu'llaqat" from the pre-Islamic Arabia. There might be better translations around (more readable/more faithful), but if you know Arabic, and just want the context and the meaning of some words to try to figure out the poem for yourself, this is the book to read. However, I would have liked for it to contain the original Arabic as well. I read the first ode, and it enlightened me to many of the subtleties and historical contexts that I had not been able to find out on myself or from the web.
