Beginner's Turkish Teach Yourself
ReUploaded by arcadius & Mirror added by DE 24.03.2017
Beginner's Turkish Teach Yourself-As modern Turkish is a phonetic language we have started with the Turkish alphabet and pronunciation. Look at the letters, listen to them more than once, then imitate the sounds. At this stage do not try to learn the alphabet by heart. Once you have practised it you can refer back to it if you need to. Throughout the book there is plenty of pronunciation practice. Unit 3 concentrates on the alphabet and Turkish names to give more practice.
Each unit has at least two dialogues. Most of the dialogues have very simple comprehension questions before and after. The mini-test and exercises are essential parts of each unit. For each unit you can choose whether you read each dialogue first or listen to it first. You may prefer to do both together. Whichever way you do it, listen to and read the dialogues a number of times.
Do not worry if you don't understand everything, your understanding will improve as time goes on. Don't try to learn all the items in the vocabulary box off by heart - you can go back any time you want. In real life, people do not learn lists of vocabulary - they are simply exposed to words over and over again in a context which they know, and in the end (with a little looking-up or asking) things stick.
Speak along with the dialogues as you get to know them and imitate what you hear. Don't be afraid to make mistakes.
After checking your understanding with the comprehension questions and answers, read the language points carefully and go back to the dialogue.
The practice exercises are where you can have some fun. If you want to write the answers in the book, do so in pencil. Then you can rub them out later and try again. When you have completed a couple of units, go back to the exercises in earlier units - it is very satisfying to find them easier to do than the first time!
Early on in your studies find something real to read, such as Turkish newspapers, magazines or comics.
If you have access to the internet, spend a few moments searching for items in Turkish - you may turn up anything from a collection of Turkish recipes to the life story of Ataturk. We have put some web addresses of general interest at the back of the book and some units have references to websites related specifically to the content of the unit.
Set yourself a routine for learning, somewhere relaxed. Look at our section called Learning tips. You may find some of the advice helpful, especially if you are returning to learning after a long break.
Why learn about Turkish culture?
Throughout the book, we have included culture notes (marked with Q in the book) alongside language learning points. We have done this for a number of reasons. People from different cultures use language in different ways and as you start to learn Turkish a little knowledge of the cultural context will help you communicate well with Turkish people.
Good communication is not always about accurate pronunciation and grammar - if you learn the manners and customs expected by native speakers of a language, you will be received with friendship and respect. Also knowing about the culture of a country you visit helps you understand what you see and hear around you.
For example, if you listen to English speakers shopping in England you will hear them using 'please' and 'thank you' many times. This would seem a little strange to Turkish speakers, who express politeness differently - in the way they greet the shopkeeper and the form of address they express through verb endings.
Philosophers argue whether the way a language works reflects the thinking of its speakers, or vice versa! This argument has a chicken and egg feel and is hard to resolve, but it is interesting to note that whilst English speakers wish each other just one 'Good night', Turkish speakers wish each other Ä°yi geceler (many 'Good nights')!
Hospitality, good manners and respectful social interaction are very important in Turkish culture. Turkish has set phrases to wish people well on a wide range of occasions, such as when offering and receiving food, getting a haircut and wearing new clothes. If you learn to use a few of these, Turkish speakers will be delighted by your manners.
